It is the question we get asked in almost every first meeting. A business owner in Delhi has a budget, a website that is not doing much, and a choice to make. Should the money go into Google Ads, which can start producing enquiries this week, or into SEO, which is cheaper over time but asks for patience?
The honest answer is that they solve different problems, and the right starting point depends on how quickly you need enquiries, how competitive your category is, and how long you can realistically stay invested. Here is how we help clients decide.
The short version
- Google Ads buys you attention now. Switch it on and you can be in front of buyers the same day. Switch it off and you disappear the same day.
- SEO earns you attention permanently. It takes about three months to show first movement, six to nine months for genuine traction, and a full year to reach its strongest position. Once it is there it keeps working even in months when you spend nothing.
- For most Delhi businesses the answer is both, in a deliberate order. Ads carry the enquiry load while SEO is being built, then spend gradually shifts as organic traffic takes over.
When Google Ads should come first
Start with paid campaigns if any of the following describe you.
- You need enquiries within weeks, not quarters, because cash flow depends on it.
- You are launching something new and have no idea yet which of your services people actually want.
- Your business is seasonal and the season is close.
- You are testing a new area of Delhi NCR and want to know whether demand exists before committing to content and links.
- Your margins comfortably absorb the cost of a paid enquiry.
There is a second, quieter reason to run ads early. A well structured account produces real search term data within a few weeks. You find out precisely which words your buyers type, which of them convert, and which of them waste money. That data makes the SEO plan far better than any keyword tool would. We regularly build a client search strategy around what their ad account taught us in month one.
When SEO should come first
Lead with organic search if this sounds more like you.
- You have time. You are planning for next year, not next Tuesday.
- Your category has high paid competition and you would be bidding against national brands with far deeper pockets.
- Your customers research carefully before they buy, so guides, comparisons and answers do a lot of your selling.
- You are a local business where the map pack and organic listings carry most of the clicks.
- You want an asset that keeps producing after the invoice stops, rather than rented traffic.
The catch is the wait, and it is a real one. We are deliberately blunt with clients about this because the businesses that get the best results from SEO are the ones who understood the timeline on day one and did not panic in month four.
What the SEO timeline honestly looks like
- Months one to three. Research, technical fixes, page structure, content foundations. Rankings begin to appear for longer and more specific searches. Enquiry volume barely moves.
- Months four to six. Positions start climbing on terms that matter. Traffic becomes noticeably better and the first organic enquiries arrive.
- Months six to nine. Genuine traction. This is the window where most of our clients see organic search become a dependable source of enquiries rather than a pleasant surprise.
- Months ten to twelve and beyond. The strongest, most stable rankings, and the point where the cost of each organic enquiry drops well below the cost of a paid one.
We have written a fuller breakdown in how long SEO really takes in Delhi, including what happens in each phase and why stopping early is the most expensive decision of the lot.
The approach that works best for most Delhi businesses
In practice we rarely recommend one or the other. We recommend a sequence.
- Month one. Launch a tight, tightly targeted ad campaign on your highest intent searches only. Small, focused, measured on enquiries rather than clicks. At the same time, start the technical and on page SEO work.
- Months two to six. Ads carry the enquiry load and keep the phone ringing. SEO builds underneath, guided by the search terms the ads have proven convert.
- Months six to nine. Organic starts contributing meaningfully. We begin pausing the ad keywords where you now rank well organically, and move that budget to terms you do not yet own.
- After twelve months. Organic carries the base load. Ads become a deliberate tool for launches, seasons and the handful of searches that are simply too competitive to win organically.
Done this way you never have a quiet quarter waiting for SEO to work, and you never end up permanently dependent on paid traffic.
Do not forget the third thing
Both channels send people to the same place, and that place decides whether any of it was worth doing. If your website loads slowly, hides your phone number, or makes somebody fill in nine fields to ask a simple question, you are paying to lose people at the last step.
Before increasing spend on either channel, it is almost always cheaper to fix the page people land on. A clear headline, obvious contact options, proof that you have done this before, and a form that asks for the minimum will usually lift enquiries more than any bid adjustment.
A newer consideration: AI search
An increasing number of buyers now start with ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews rather than a traditional search box. Those systems build their answers from content they can read, understand and trust, which means the same work that earns organic rankings also decides whether you get mentioned in an AI answer. Paid ads have no influence there at all. It is one more reason not to leave organic until later, and it is why we treat AI SEO as part of the same programme rather than an add on.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run SEO and Google Ads at the same time?
Yes, and for most businesses it is the better choice. They support each other. Ads produce immediate enquiries and reliable keyword data, and SEO gradually reduces how much of your enquiry volume you have to pay for.
Will running ads improve my organic rankings?
Not directly. Google does not rank you higher organically because you advertise. Indirectly it helps, because ads bring visitors, engagement, brand searches and data that make your organic strategy sharper.
How soon will Google Ads bring enquiries?
Usually within the first week or two if the targeting is right and the landing page is decent. The first month is about learning, so expect the cost of each enquiry to settle downward from month two onward as we cut wasted spend.
Why does SEO take six to nine months when the changes are made in week one?
Because Google needs to recrawl your site, reassess it against competitors who are also improving, and then watch how real users behave on your pages before it trusts you with better positions. Trust is earned over months, not applied on a schedule.
What happens if I stop SEO at month four?
You pay for the entire foundation and collect almost none of the return. Month four is typically the last quiet month before positions start moving properly. It is the single most common and most expensive mistake we see.
Is SEO cheaper than ads in the long run?
For most established businesses, yes, because organic traffic keeps arriving after the work is done while paid traffic stops the moment the campaign is paused. The trade off is that you have to fund the first six to twelve months before that saving appears.
Which should a brand new business in Delhi choose?
Start with a small, focused ad campaign to prove there is demand and to learn what your buyers actually search for, and begin the technical and content SEO work in parallel so that the clock starts running. Waiting a year to begin SEO simply means your strongest rankings arrive a year later.
