Most local businesses lose enquiries in the four seconds before their website appears. Nobody reports it, nobody complains, and it never shows up in a rankings report. The visitor taps your listing, waits, sees a white screen, goes back and taps the competitor underneath you. As far as your analytics is concerned, that person barely existed.
Core Web Vitals are Google’s attempt to measure exactly that moment. They are a genuine ranking signal, but the ranking argument is the less interesting half. The interesting half is that a slow site quietly reduces every other number in your marketing, including the ads you are paying for.
The three metrics, in plain language
Largest Contentful Paint
How long until the main thing on the screen, usually your hero image or headline, has actually rendered. Google considers under 2.5 seconds good. On small business sites we audit in Delhi, this is the metric that fails most often, and the cause is nearly always an enormous unoptimised image or a page builder loading half a megabyte of code before anything is drawn.
Interaction to Next Paint
How quickly the page responds when somebody taps a button, opens a menu or starts filling a form. Under 200 milliseconds is the target. Failures here feel like a page that is visible but dead, which is worse than a slow load because the visitor has already committed attention.
Cumulative Layout Shift
How much the content jumps around while loading. The score should stay under 0.1. This is the one that makes people tap the wrong thing, usually because an advert, a cookie banner or a late loading font pushed the layout down at the exact moment they reached for the call button.
Why this is worse on mobile in Delhi
Almost all local searches here happen on a phone, often on a mid range Android device on a patchy mobile connection somewhere between the metro and a basement clinic. Your website is not being judged on the office fibre connection and the developer’s laptop, which is where it was built and tested. It is being judged in a lift, one handed, by somebody who is comparing you against two other listings.
That gap between how a site feels to the owner and how it performs in the field is the single most common surprise in our audits. A homepage that loads instantly for you can take six seconds for the customer, and the customer will not tell you.
What actually makes a small business site slow
It is rarely one dramatic problem. It is usually five ordinary ones stacked on top of each other.
- Images straight from the camera. A 4 MB photograph resized in the browser to 400 pixels wide is the most common single cause of a failing LCP score. It should be compressed, correctly sized and served in a modern format.
- Plugin accumulation. Thirty plugins, six of which are still doing something useful. Every one of them can add scripts and stylesheets to every page, whether that page uses the feature or not.
- Heavy page builder templates. Convenient to edit, expensive to load. Nested sections, animations and sliders on a homepage are usually the worst offenders, and homepage sliders in particular cost a lot and convert almost nothing.
- Cheap shared hosting. If the server takes 1.5 seconds just to begin responding, no amount of front end optimisation will rescue it. This is one of the few problems that money solves directly.
- Third party scripts. Chat widgets, review carousels, multiple analytics and pixel tags, embedded maps and font files loaded from three different providers. Each one is somebody else’s server deciding how fast your website feels.
- No caching or compression. Straightforward to configure, frequently never configured at all.
The order we fix things
Speed work goes wrong when it is done as a checklist. Measured properly, two or three changes usually deliver most of the gain, and this is the sequence we work through on website projects.
- Measure the real thing first. Field data from real visitors, not just a single lab test. Lab scores tell you what to fix; field data tells you whether customers noticed.
- Fix the server response. Better hosting or proper page caching, so the browser is not waiting before it can start.
- Deal with the images. Compress, resize to the dimensions actually used, serve modern formats, and lazy load everything below the fold while never lazy loading the hero image.
- Cut what is not earning its weight. Remove dead plugins, drop the slider, load chat widgets after the page is interactive, and stop loading five font weights when you use two.
- Stabilise the layout. Reserve space for images, embeds and banners so nothing shifts while loading.
- Re-measure after four weeks. Field data is collected over a rolling window, so scores move gradually rather than the day you deploy.
Speed is a conversion problem before it is a ranking problem
Google treats Core Web Vitals as one signal among many, and a fast page with weak content will not outrank a slow page that answers the question properly. So if you are choosing between fixing speed and fixing what your pages actually say, fix the content.
The reason speed still deserves attention is the money already being spent upstream of it. Every rupee of Google or Meta budget lands on a page that either loads or does not, which means the same click costs you more when the page is slow. Improve load time and the cost per enquiry across paid campaigns falls without touching the bids. How to check your own site in ten minutes
- PageSpeed Insights. Enter your URL and read the mobile tab, not the desktop one. If field data appears at the top, trust that over the lab score below it.
- Search Console. The Core Web Vitals report groups your pages by template, which tells you whether the problem is one page or every page.
- Your own phone, on mobile data. Turn off wifi, clear the cache, and open your site as a stranger would. This test is unscientific and unusually persuasive.
Frequently asked questions
Will fixing Core Web Vitals improve my rankings?
Sometimes, and rarely dramatically on its own. It is a tie breaker rather than a lever. Where it reliably helps is conversion, and where it helps most is on mobile in competitive local categories where visitors have two other options a tap away.
Is a perfect score of 100 worth chasing?
No. Passing the three thresholds on mobile with real user data is the goal. The last few points usually cost more than they return and often mean removing something a customer valued.
Should I rebuild or optimise my existing site?
Optimise first, because most sites have several cheap wins available. Rebuild when the template itself is the problem, when every page needs the same structural fix, or when the site is fighting you every time you want to change a line of text.
Do speed plugins solve this?
Caching and optimisation plugins handle a real portion of it and are worth having. They cannot fix slow hosting, oversized images uploaded by hand, or a homepage carrying four animations, and aggressive settings can break layouts, so they need testing rather than switching on and hoping.
